It’s so true. Did you know that May is Jewish history month in the TDSB? In 18 years of teaching I’ve never once seen it put into practice. Not even a mention of it the whole month. Just saying…

In reply to Tyra. Thank you Tyra, I hope that the validating I try to instill will have a lasting impact on my students. As a teacher, we are supposed to teach and reach ALL kids, so I feel this is yet another why of doing so. And like you said, at the end of the day is is all about self-worth and a positive sense of identity that we must bring to kids. Thank you and I will share how my ideas are/have been implemented!

This is a really good point. I am Christian so I clearly benefit from the public school system’s Christian agenda. But this article really made me envision the beautiful experience and boost of confidence that children from other cultures and religions would experience through a celebration of their cultural events at school. I’m picturing the smile on the children’s faces when they realize that the traditions they have grown up with at home are actually noticed, legitimized, and celebrated in their home-away-from-home: the classroom. What a boost of belonging, self-worth, comfort, and positive sense of identity this would bring to kids.. Great vision Matthew. Let us know what ways you are able to implement ideas like this… I’m excited for your students / school. 🙂
