I'm trying to tease through your statement here. On one hand you say that the faces are threatening and not communicating "capability nor intelligence, etc." but then you so they don't deny either. So basically, you are attempting to define something by saying it has cannot be defined, which is quite frankly irrational. The fact that you see lack of talent or perseverance is proof of my entire sentiment with this post. These could also be boys who are hurting, in pain and disappointed.

These three faces appear both threatening and defensive to me. That is to say, not friendly, not receptive. Is that masculinity? Being black? Cultural styling? It doesn't communicate capability, intelligence, talent, or perseverance; but it also doesn't deny those qualities. Their expressions are like closed windows that hide everything.
