Thank you for your testimony about the way that White supremacy invades schools and relationships between the people in them. I am a fellow writer, and a piece I’m working on right now is about what would happen if all privileged White teachers were to commit to going home, to educating our own people instead of going into majority-POC schools to try to save children there. Your post is very insightful and true. I experienced the same thing as a young, new teacher. I was considered the expert on Black boys and became the quasi assistant principal. Once I became the head football coach, officials would often approach one of my white assistant coaches and ask if he was the head coach. When I became “The” principal, these slights did not cease. 40 years as an educator and still fighting for the respect we deserve!

Keep up the fight! Our children need you.

Thank you. Thank you for the work you do. Thank you for your professionalism. I hate that there is no escape from the microaggressions that paint the world in broad and finite brush strokes. Thank you for your resilience in the face of exhaustion. The children need more teachers like you, it’s true, but the educators need you perhaps even moreso.
